Our first attempt with whale sharks was many years ago in the Sea of Cortex. We spent three days searching at sea, at the unkind mercy of luck and a hired spotter plane. On our last day, we swam for 2 hours with one indifferent 40′ long specimen. Exhausted by the swimming, with chaffed armpits we left with a sense of awe and not one really good photograph. While this whet our appetite, it did not make me lust for a second trip of this type. Years later, we received a home exchange offer from Isla Mujeres, Mexico and Marie remembered that this was ground zero for these hungry behemoths.
The best description we’ve heard of this phenomenon: “Imagine walking through a parking lot, filled with school buses, all with their hoods open, coming at you from any and all directions”. This was a bit of an understatement. Look on…
